Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) in collaboration with Infineon Technologies Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and Melaka Blood Bank recently organized a blood donation drive as one of its annual corporate social responsibility activities to give back to the community.
The campaign, themed “Blood connects us all” was held at Main Hall, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) on December 7 2016 attracts a crowd of over 2,000 participants. It was aimed at helping to replenish the depleting blood supply of hospitals nationwide. The campaign was officiated by the Exco for Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology, Green Technology and Innovation Melaka, Yang Berhormat Datuk Wira Haji Md Yunos bin Husin.Blood donation is a priceless service to mankind. Nothing compares to the preciousness of human blood. The gift of blood is the gift of life. As there is no substitute for human blood, voluntary blood donors are mandatory. “What takes only a few minutes of our time, makes an infinite difference to those in need of multiple transfusions – our deeds may save another person’s life” says Mr. Lee Cheong Chee, President and Chief Executive Officer of Infineon Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
The ten hours campaign received an overwhelming support from staff and students of UTeM who turned up as early as 9 am for registration as blood donors. Infineon’s employees also participated in the donation drive with Mr. Lee Cheong Chee who led the group of donors. UTeM also invited universities and colleges within the area together with communities from Alor Gajah, Durian Tunggal and Ayer Keroh. The initiative was a great success with 946 donors registered and a new record of 755 bags of blood collected for the state of Melaka. “Today’s effort has been a huge achievement for UTeM. We have managed to gather our students and staff to be here in this spirit of connecting with those in need through generous blood donation,” says Professor Datuk Dr. Shahrin Sahib, Vice Chancellor of UTeM.
In conjunction with the campaign Infineon Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd which has been carrying our similar CSR activity for the past few years also presented donations to organizations and associations such as the St John’s Ambulance, Red Crescent Society (PBSM), Malaysia Association Help for the Poor and Terminally Ill and UTeM Health Centre.
This is the first collaborative blood donation campaign organized by UTeM in synergy with Infineon and the Melaka Blood Bank. UTeM aims at making the blood donation drive as an annual activity so as to instill social responsibility awareness amongst students and staff alike. UTeM is the first Public Technical University with student enrolment close to 12,000 and staff members of 2,105. Since its establishment on 1 December 2000, UTeM has produced over 20,000 graduates.
